Oddly enough, I haven't actually seen Nenette et Boni, though Claire Denis is one of my favorites and I downloaded it sometime ago. You've just reminded me that it's still sitting on my computer, waiting to be watched.

Marilyn said...

Nice list, with some titles I don't know. And I haven't seen The Wiser Sex, but I'm glad to see my name associated with it.

J.D. said...

I'm totally seeing Zelig now.

Mandy said...

I am so, so tired after Twilight last night. But I'm glad we went. And there was a minor celebrity in line with us - Chris, a finalist from this season's "So You Think You Can Dance" - was watching it with a bunch of his SMU dancer friends.

Fox said...

Ed-

Well my gut instincts were right! When I think of your site, I think of little movies like Nenette and Boni. And, plus, I'd like to see it reviewed on your site one day! Thing is, I wouldn't even put in among my favorite Claire Denis. That would probably be I Can't Sleep or No Fear, No Die (still awaiting a DVD release!).

Marilyn-

I think b/c of your profile pick, I will always assoiciate you with the older flicks. And for some reason I fixate alot on Claudette Colbert. She was just the cutest button!

J.D.-

HA! I knew you would react that way! :)

Mandy-

Um, HELLO! How was it!?!

J.D. said...

:-P

Also, Chungking banner?! Damn, dude.

Ed Howard said...

I'll definitely be reviewing it eventually. I Can't Sleep is pretty good, but my favorite Denis films are definitely Beau travail and Vendredi soir. The former is a towering masterpiece, and the latter is a small, intimate pleasure, one of the best portraits of pure sexual desire I can think of.

Fletch said...

Ahahahaha - awesome twist, my man. Excellent, as it ought to get a reaction out of at least 26 folks.

Kindergarten Cop? Really? Not that I don't like it, but I'm surprised it isn't some Cage flick...

Fox said...

Fletch-

It's cuz you have to look after all us LAMBs! :)

bill r. said...

I don't understand mine...

bill r. said...

And I would have thought the first movie that popped into your head when thinking of Fletch would have been Fletch Lives. Or possibly Fletch.

Fox said...

This is either gonna sound dumb or make me look dumb (which I guess are the same... I'm making myself look super dumb right now), but for awhile I thought Fletch was "Fletch"'s real name.

But you're right. Chevy Chase does enter my mind often when thinking of Fletch (that sounds weird), but K-Cop won out yesterday.

Jules and Jim is b/c I always think of you and Rick as BFF. It went back to when y'all bonded on something over at Coosa Creek. And then, of course, y'all are both "chasing" after Marilyn all the time (duh, it's so obvious! Just ask Jonathan!).

bill r. said...

Well, I do like Rick, so okay. I don't know what it is that we particularly bonded over, though.

I don't like Marilyn! Girls are stupid!

(Sigh...how I secretly pine for her...)

Rick Olson said...

We are BFF ... but, like my BF, I can't remember what it is we bonded over ...

And am I Jules or Jim, cause I wouldn't want to be Jim, you know because

SPOILER ALERT

He croaks in the end.

On the other hand, he gets to spend a lot more quality time in the sack with Jeanne Moreau, which cannot be a bad thing ...

Rick Olson said...

Or is it Jules who gets to spend more quality time in the sack with Jeanne Moreau? Alas, methinks I need to watch it again ...

Marilyn said...

Bill - Don't let the hubby catch you at that. He may not have a belly button, but he's, um, wait, where was I going with this.

Peggy Cummins is so cool, and that picture somehow captures a part of my personality - just a little wicked and always thinking. I do think I'm more of an "older film" gal that most, so your association makes sense to me.

As for Colbert, she's always been a fav of mine. Check some of her films before 1934 and you'll get a rare glimpse of her right profile. She looked pretty bad from that angle, and when she had enough clout, she wouldn't allow photographing of her on that side.

Jonathan Lapper said...

Beckett? What the...? What in the hell about Beckett makes you think of me? I would think James Bond would make you, and everyone, think of me. Or maybe some some porn movie about a guy who's really hung.

Fox said...

Huh huh huh... Marilyn just said "cummins".

HEY! Sorry Marilyn! You started it with that weird belly button lead-in about your hubby vs. Bill in the UH-HUM dept.

And I didn't wanna leak this, but Rick Olson's obsession with Jules and Jim crosses over with his obsession over Marilyn in that he calls Mrs. (that's MRS. you guys!!) Ferdinand "Marilyn Moreau" when it's just us guys playing darts in the garage.

That last sentence is funny on many levels...

I work at Dairy Queen. I don't get it.

Rick Olson said...

Which last sentence? My scintillating one about Jeanne Moreau? Or Jonathan's about being hung (I presume like a horse)?

Jonathan Lapper said...

Nothing ever happens on Mars.

Jonathan Lapper said...

Everybody has a stool.

Fox said...

Boy, Jonathan, you're really gonna feel bad when I explain why I thought of Becket for you:

1.) In my mind, I've always imagined you as looking like Richard Burton. 2.) You're kind of a king-like figure among us.

Oh great! Now Bill is crying again and telling everybody Merry Christmas...

Fox said...

I work at Dairy Queen. I don't get it.

Now that is funny! So much so that it made me LOL in my office.

Jonathan Lapper said...

Well I guess that's better than Henry VIII. But I don't feel bad, I feel happy and joyful. Making you laugh is what I live for.

Jonathan Lapper said...

And I look more like Clark Gable, just so you know.

Fox said...

That Joe Cocker/The Lion King YouTube video is playing in my head again...

And just how eagles fly from a mountain high, I must now flee my office and leave this post just as it was getting awesome.

But please, everyone, keep it going without me. I mean, you've got weiner jokes (Joe Cocker!) to roll with for the next hour so let's make this happen.

p.s. Dairy Queen workers are the backbone of our society.

Hock your jewels. Use the money for stools.

Jonathan Lapper said...

It's a zen thing, like how many babies fit in a tire.

bill r. said...

When you get to the line, "Nothing ever happens in Blaine", you sing "Nothing ever happens in Blay". Don't say the Ns, they'll say the Ns.

Jonathan Lapper said...

You have to go where the love is. And the love for me, right now, is in Miami, not Blaine.

Kat Candler said...

aw. so sweet.

Jonathan Lapper said...

You know, Kat, I'm the one that told Fox to select that movie for you. Seriously.

debbie said...

I have never heard of La Ronde! But, I'm so flattered that you thought of me!

This tagline for it confuses me though:
A Wonderful Merry-Go-Round of Love With Eleven Stars

Fox said...

Bill & Jonathan to Fox : "Payback is a bitch mofu*ka!"

I knew you guys were upset with me, but to use this comment section as a place to quote Lawrence of Arabia is over the line!

Kat- :0)

Don't listen to Jonathan. He's jealous.

Debbie-

I chose La Ronde for two reasons... 1) I've always thought you looked like Simone Simon (I think I told you this before and even shown you that picture), and 2) I watched this movie recently and it's bursting with ideas and flash and craft... and it's over 50 years old! I think it has the spirit that matches your work ethic right now.

Bob Turnbull said...

Thanks for the link Fox. Given your pick for me ("Freaked"), I'm thinking perhaps I spent too much time at the After Dark festival.

Nah, you can't spend too much time there.

And thanks for bloating up Lapper's ego. "King-like"? He's probably going to make us genuflect before commenting on his blog now...

Oh Debbie? If you look like Simone Simon, I think that it is your duty to put up a profile picture. I'm just sayin'...

Jonathan Lapper said...

And thanks for bloating up Lapper's ego. "King-like"? He's probably going to make us genuflect before commenting on his blog now...

You mean you don't already?

Ah, I'm just joking. But in all seriousness, I grovel before commenting on Marilyn's blog. If it's pitiful enough, she let's me comment.

debbie said...

Flash and Craft!

Well, that's a sale if I've ever heard one! I'll have to watch it now!

Thanks for the tip!

I (mAQ) LOVE UNDISPUTED!!!

RC said...

this must have taken quite some time - nice free association.

curious as to the association with Undisputed. Can't say I've seen that one

:-)

I'm proud to be free-associated!

PIPER said...

You comment whore.

I'm disgusted with you.

I can't even look at you.

I'm sick to my stomach.

You're filthy.

Bob Turnbull said...

I think what Piper is really trying to say is:

"Damn, why didn't I think of this first?!"

Daniel Getahun said...

Jeez, I'm a bit late here but I have to say I'm honored to be included in such a list (and for such a good movie reminding you of me...) - thanks!
